Temporary People, Part Two
As I mentioned in my last Temporary People post, the book has an amazing hook, and without going down the route of spoilers, I feel comfortable saying the book mixes political espionage, humor, sadness, the fantastic and a thorough examination of human nature -- it leaves one with the taste of a deliciously surreal Twilight Zone episode (i.e. one of the few minus any supernatural elements, just men doing bad things to other men, leaving the audience with a moment of disbelief at what's just taken place) with all the wonderful after notes of a well written piece of literature.Narrated by a weary protagonist that isn't all he seems to be (in more ways than one), who leads the reader on a tragic adventure that echoes current events, Temporary People is a compact book housing a story full of twists and turns that keep the reader flipping pages just to see what is going to happen next. And when the last page is flipped, the final revelations laid out, one can't help but feel compelled to go back and reread those same pages they've already flown through in search of the subtle this-and-thats Gillis presents.
