The Heart Grows Fonder

It's been almost ten months since I did any kind of regular updating here, the lone exception being my previous post which only came to be at the initiation of the ever amazing John Mantooth.

In the time since this corner of the web went on hiatus my wife and I have strived to be good parents to our now 14 month old daughter, we got the exciting news that we're expecting another little girl come this April, I stopped teaching (something I both loved and hated in equal, surreal parts), the day job has gotten even crazier and bigger, and I'm proud to say I've been meat-free for nearly a year.

Other things have been going on to... we're working on finishing a basement, our house has committed to become more organized and minimalist (the result of which has been three large hauls to our local Goodwill with donations), Stymie is operating at near full steam mostly by the gumption of the editorial team I'm fortunate to have working with me, I started a site devoted to my day job (or rather the career of my day job) and it's become one part personal branding tool and one part info resource; but some other stuff has taken a bit of a back seat as I've been busy living life. I'm sad to say I haven't read that much in the last year, maybe a half dozen books or so (note, I'm hoping to rectify that in the coming months, starting with Lev Grossman's The Magician King), and I can honestly say that little to no creative writing has occurred.

These last two items have started to bother me only in the last month or so as I've had some time off from work with an opportunity to reflect on what I want, at least in terms of my goal to write (and then get published) a novel.

I've come to the realization that I can't see the endeavor so much as a thing I squeeze in as time permits or as a hobby - if I want to be a writer, then I need to write. I need to treat it like the job I want it to possibly some day be (even if it's only ever a part-time gig). So I'm devoting my free time, the little that I have - given all the above, and using it to log words as much as possible. I'm not going to surf the internet, not build my Plants vs. Zombies skills, or waste time looking for ways to waste time - I'm going to write every day, how much is hard to say as time can be so fickle, but rather I'm targeting a word count: 333 words every day minimum.

It's a small number that I hope to blow through and build on most days, but it's attainable enough that on my worst days I should be able to get something down and keep moving forward. Wish me luck, please start stopping by (you may have noted some aesthetic changes to the site - let's just call this post a fresh start for the entire blog) as I plan to start posting again about the novel and related things, and last but not least a mere 14 days into 2013: Happy New Year!
